Default Sneaky engine swap

Hi,

I have come across a 1992 f150 extended cab that I love very much. Everything on the truck is apparently stock as factory. It has the 3.55 tag on the diff, the E4od, correct trim paint for VIN and has a 302 Windsor with the firing order still in the non HO order.

The truck has been cared for pretty well and the man that sold it to me told me it had a “coyote” 302 and not the standard 302. I knew that this was not new enough to be a coyote motor....however the 4,700bl truck pulls like a champ and darts through 0-80 like a small sedan. It’s by no means a fast vehicle but I’m not convinced that it is a 150hp stock 302.

Is it possible they put an H.O. and then placed the intake and such from the original? Could something else be afoot? Or am I just really delusional about what 150hp feels like?

Eh, thinking the 5.0L was rated for about 185hp during those years. Used to joke that I had to measure 0-60 times with a calendar on my '89, so thinking some mods of some kind have been made...

Here are some pics. Looks like a pretty basic Windsor to me.

They only thing that stands out is the big blue fuel lines and clean injectors. I think that the orange means that they are still 19#. Firing order on the cap looks like 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. Other than that I found a crack in the header, rear main leaks and there are a few vacuum hoses that seem to be cut or going nowhere. Lol

I have to put a new starter on it and I’ve heard that there is a number on the block that can be seen when it’s removed. I will post that this weekend.

It just seems weird my buddy called it an “old man” truck one night so I floored it at a stop sign and it roasted the tires for about 30 feet before it shifted and planted us in our seats. He said that he had the same truck and his didn’t do that. 😂

Definitely 100% not a Coyote, but if its doing that, it's definitely a 302 Windsor with some love if you know what I mean. Could have a cam and heads. intake looks stock.

So it’s possible that it was just better taken care of compared to the average old truck? Other than the coyote comment, the guy seemed to be pretty peculiar about taking care of the truck. Everything on it looks exactly like the stock f150 from the book. It even has the quality control stricter in the back window.

I was also told to turn the OD off whenever I start the truck and to turn it on at 55. Is this true/necessary? The RPM does drop if you leave it on and drive around under 30, but I thought that the OD gear wouldn’t be engaged until higher speeds regardless.

Did this year of Windsor have the forged pistons or was that only in H.O.?

I have to ask too many questions because all of my friends drive imports and dodges.🙄

It probably feels a lot peppier around town with O/D off. That's not necessary but yeah it probably does jump into OD around 35mph normally. Do as you please with that! I don't think there are issues with that trans re: OD. Not sure on the pistons though.

Look at those exhaust manifold bolts, stock spark plug wires from 1992. That motor has never been touched.

Thank you for helping out. I couldn’t see any signs of it being taken apart. Usually you see new bolts and gaskets. I wasn’t sure if it was possible for someone to slap the stock intake, covers, etc onto something and make it look stock. I also wasn’t sure if I could see the difference if they did something 15 years ago.

I’m just happy it runs great. Would be nice with about 150 more horses, but it’s pretty decent for not spending $50k on a new one.

Its possible that the guys in the ford plant had a lot of coffee that day... or somebody accidentally grabbed the cam and springs out of the wrong box. Lol
