Default Rear End identification Help?

so i noticed the other day that i was getting a thump thump thump vibration from the rear at highway speeds. i also noticed that the driverside rear tire smelled of gear oil. it looks like its leaking from the driverside wheel and both sides of the center chunk. as well as the bottom of the cover. but looks like the cover has been off before. add in how rusty it all is i figure my best bet is to just get another rear end.

info- 1994 f150 4x4 5.0L v8 automatic

rear end tag-

S288F
3 31 88 4C03

more info - door sticker says the axle code is 17
according to
http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...s_it_posi.html

that is a Conventional non-Positraction Differential with a 3.31 gear set.

so what i need to look for is a 8.8 with a 3.31 gear set?

please confirm or correct anything i might have wrong.

Yes because yours is 4x4 you need to match the same gears as you have in the front axle.

At this point you could also search for an H7 axle code which is 3.31 Limited Slip

Sounds like you have a plugged vent. And maybe a bad seal/wheel bearing.

Every differential has a vent tube. Look for a rubber hose, sometimes connected to a small block on the axle tube. Follow the brake lines and you should find it. The differential has to vent or the pressure builds up in the diff forcing the oil out seals or wherever it can.

The vent tube is also the bolt that holds the distribution block for your rear brake lines. It's on the left side of the pumpkin if you look at it from the rear.
It should have a cap on it that will feel loose but be next to impossible to remove without pliers. Since you have a 4x4, it could just be covered w/ mud if you are inclined to get it dirty on a regular basis.

i will check that tomorrow. mud or road salt may be plugging it. i didnt really get this truck because i go off road a lot. i got it because where i used to live the snow would get so bad that once over night the snow drifts blocked me into my garage and i had to crash my way out. neighbor came and plowed later. almost went in the ditch more than once. ditches big enough to swallow a car but nothing a 4x4 couldnt climb out of.
