Default Quick question about the 4.9 I6

So I got my dads old 93 F150 XL this past november from my grandpop. I was wondering how much umph can i get you of the motor, before i am looking at big costs in mods? still getting caught up to the 75k miles it has on it (original everything this truck is a baby ) and while I have entertained doing a 351 swap it is just not in the cards.

How much power could i make with just bolt-on stuff before I start sinking serious time and money into it?

(Side note what is a good replacement for the stock 4speed w/overdrive)

Well, hate to break it to ya but there is not a lot of stuff out there for the 300. The motor is reliable as hell, at at 75 k you have at least triple that left in her.

You can advance the timing, upgrade the ignition system, and drop in a KN air filter. Otherwise your looking at some serious spending to mod it.

The 300 is a great motor, it just isnt fast. I love mine as pretty much everyone who owns one does. Hope this helps

Timing and ignition will help make it go faster and stronger. But just how they are designed they are not meant to be as fast or reved as high as say, the 302.

Here's a good write up on the ignition upgrade and timing bump. It's in a v8 but you get the picture. I did this to my 4.9 and it helped. Ive also her that the exhaust is restrictive, so changing it will also help. I am going to do mine this summer.

A lot of people swear the stock manifolds work better than headers do for the 300's. But dual exhaust helps alot too

Its not going to be as deep as a V-8, but mine has a deep tone, it is dualed out of the rear corners of the truck.
