Default Power steering question

I'm replacing the pressure and return lines in my 1994 f-150 4x4.Originally there was no filter in the lines.Should I put a filter the line or just put it back the way it was with no filter?

I cant see how filtering could ever be a bad thing. If you have it apart, I'd say go for it! Clean fluids are good fluids!

+1 for adding a filter to the power steering system!

Search "Magnefine" on EBay for the best deal...

Not a good idea. If the filter is installed in the return line and it becomes restricted it could cause a seal problem plus its just one more place for a leak to develop. if you are concrned about contaminated or dirty oil just change it more often. much simpler solution to a problem that doesnt exist

It's a judgement call. Adding a PS filter seems to be the trending thing. It's pretty common to find a filter installed on the return line of most hydraulic systems so it makes sense.

I know that when i installed a new steering box last week NAPA was very clear that they wouldn't warranty it unless a filter was installed. They explained in the literature that metal particles come up through and cause premature pump & steering box failure.

Make of it what you will. I didn't put one in because the cooler line was completely missing from the truck. Just a short stub of hose going up from the PS box up to the PS pump.

Adding a filter & cooler will be a seperate project when some other things are further along.

I was very careful to completely flush the system with fresh power steering fluid though. ( Once you open the system up it's really easy rile up all of the rust & mung that was settled and not bothering anything.)
