My driver side rear wheel, when jacked up and in neutral spins forward but not backward. Passenger side goes both ways. When running, both wheels go orward but not reverse.
I can tell it goes into reverse, makes 1/8rotation and locks up.
does this sound more like rear end or a transmission issue? What should I check next? It isn' the brakes.

Pull the cover off the back of the diff and see if something's broken.

It isn't the diff. Pulled cover, inspected, cleaned and did find debris. two ea square tabs about 3/4 x 3/4 in that I cannot for the life of me, figure out where they came from. Also a few teeth are chipped. I will need to rebuild differential soon, but it isn't the problem.

When the drive shaft is disconnected, the LR wheel spins. When connected (and through transfer and transmission) the LR wheel will not spin backwards.

A friend offered an idea to check if transfer case or transmission. I put the 4 wheel drive selector into 4 wheel neutral. When this is done, the LR wheel can spin. This has isolated the issue in the transfer case I believe. Next stop, transfer case.
