Default Engine Swap

Hey all

I'm in the process of pulling the 302 out of my 1987 F150 with the AOD trans. I've got most of the engine accessories off and the exhaust mostly off, just soaking some stuck bolts in PB Blaster for now. My question is with the fuel system. Do I need to pull fuel rails off the engine or fuel lines off the rails? Do I need to pull the upper intake manifold to get at disconnecting some of the injectors inside it? This is my first engine pull so I've still got a little bit to learn about it but I'm fairly confident I can manage getting it out and back in later. Any help is appreciated

thanks

There should be two fuel line connections at the fuel rails near the back of the intake manifold near the firewall - you need a fuel line disconnect tool to get them undone. They can be a real pain to get undone because of their location. Once you disconnect those you are good to go - leave the fuel rails and injectors alone.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

im trying to pull the engine to replace the oil pump and to replace all the gaskets. I’d also like to clean the block and maybe paint it, as well as deep clean the engine bay before I stab the engine back into the truck.

i need to disconnect the electrical connectors from them though, right? Or is there somewhere else I can disconnect from?

You can disconnect the entire engine harness and pull it all. Drivers side fender well. You will need to disconnect the alternator harness as well.

thats exactly what I needed to know, thank you so much. Will keep you updated with the process. I’m also looking to replace a ton of busted vacuum lines while I reinstall the engine. Does anyone have a diagram of where everything needs to go? If not, what lines do I need to make sure I have connected just to be able to drive the truck reliably?

You should clean the engine & bay BEFORE disassembling anything.

You might remove things like the air cleaner & all its ducts, but tape up the throttle body so nothing goes in.

If you plan to unplug the engine harness from the engine bay harness, read this TSB before starting:

These 2 photo albums show 2 trucks I'm working on now - they may give you some ideas on how you want to do yours. After clicking each one, click NEXT in the top left of the page to browse the rest of the album. Scroll down each page to read the captions.

wowza I fought with those fittings using PB Blaster and the scissor type fuel line removal tool for a good minute, then my girlfriend was watching, and she recommended lubing the tool itself with PB Blaster as well. The line was off less than 3 minutes after I did that. Who’d have known?

made you talking about the connectors that seem like they actually plug in right against the firewall? There’s a round one and a rectangular one and it looks like a 10mm socket to pull them. Does this sound right?
