Default E4OD transmission question......

My truck is a 96 F150 XL w 4.9L Inline 6 Cylinder and the E4OD tranny.

My torque converter is going out and I need to get another one but was thinking about buying a tranny on ebay or craigslist and rebuilding it and then swapping it out with the bad one in my truck now. I have never worked on transmissions before but I can follow instructions to a tee and have the FORD SERVICE MANUAL for the rebuild, etc.

QUESTION: I have seen people selling E4OD transmissions on Craigslist but I'm not sure what years or engines would have the same bell housing hole mounts in the same place as mine. Can anyone tell me, for example, if an E4OD from a F150 with a 5.8L engine would fit my truck?

Also, what would be a reasonable price for a used E4OD?

Any help sure would be appreciated!!

THANKS TO ALL IN THE FORUM AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Ive heard a few different things. 1. the 4.9 and 5.0 have different bell housings from the 5.8, 7.3, and 7.5. 2. I also heard that the 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 all are the same, but a 5.8 has 4 clutches vs on the 4.9 and 5.0, and the 7.3 and 7.5 have different bell housings. Which is true, I dont know for sure, I think the bell housing for the 7.3 and 7.5 are different from the rest, but not 100% sure. But what I do know is this. If your buying a use tranny to put in without a rebuild, the best is from a 96, it has all updates with valve bodies and other stuff that makes it better, and pre 92 e4ods suck. If your rebuilding a tranny period, then I would do it to the 96 specs, as they are the best e4ods.
