E4od hard shifting
1991 F-150 custom 2WD 300-6 auto 220K
I love this old truck and want to hang on to it. I’ve had it since ‘96 however the intermittent hard shifting is getting hard to take.( No pun) So I take it to local, reliable tranny shop and after they do their diagnosis they come back with, they can rebuild tranny but not guarantee that will fix hard shifting. Their reason is the E4OD of this vintage is prone to bad electrical input due to corrosion, bad sensors, shorting out in the ECU and or shorts in the dash. Has anyone else had this happen? Is my tranny hard shifting due to electrical issues or worn out internal parts?
thx

They are right, it could be that. Why didn’t they do basic tests to see if that was the problem though? If you’ve never serviced the computer, it’s due. Not saying that will solve your problem though. Search on how to pull codes from the transmission. That may assist you. On another forum, look for threads that have a got named Mark Kovalsky and follow his testing procedures he gives. He was an engineer for that trans.
Im guessing they didn’t think you needed a filter/fluid change?

I did a filter and complete fluid about 8 yrs ago but not too many miles ago. It does need a front seal and pump without a doubt. I was confused that they wanted to do the tranny work but said may not fix hard shifting b/c that was electrical. So I’m thinking let’s fix the electrical issues THEN see what the tranny needs. IHopefully I can find Mark and see what he has to say about it!
thx for that info!
