Default E4OD bolt question

Hey folks, sorry if this has been, or can be covered somewhere else. I have a 96 that has the E4OD transmission. It was rebuilt about 6,000 miles or so, due to the previous owner "shifting it before it was stopped moving into park, and power braking it, to try and burn out in it" Anyhow, today I noticed a puddle under it, and discovered that the bolts were kind of loose. As I was tightening one up, I noticed that it kept spinning. The bolt came out with the threads wrapped around it. My question is, is it possible to re tap the hole, and do I need to remove the pan to do so? Or am I going to have to go a more expensive way? Thanks for the info.

There are MANY bolts on an E4OD, but it seems like you might be talking about a pan bolt. How much torque did you put on it? There are many methods of repairing threads, and there are some that could be done without dropping the pan, depending exactly which bolt is stripped. If its bore passes through the casting, you can simply install a longer bolt with a nut. If not, HeliCoil-type repair is common & effective (when done right). I wouldn't tap it for a larger bolt because having different bolts will be confusing next time someone has to drop the pan.

Next time you drop the pan (whether it's for the bolt repair, or 2 years from now), I highly recommend adding a drain plug kit.
