Check Engine Light Help?
Hey everybody,
Okay here is the deal....about 2 years ago i was driving down the road and my check engine light just appeared out of nowhere. I didnt really bother with it or pay any attention to it until my gas mileage was going down the drain so i found the problem and it was vacuum lines so i fixed that issue and the light went off, Well a few days ago i came to a stop sign and the truck would not idle down to save its life so i automaticlly thought IAC valve. The outside tempeture that day was mid to upper 80s and it only does it when its hot out....(so i thought)...tonight i was driving home and the check engine light was going nuts. it would cut on for a few seconds and then cut right back off and it did this the whole time i was driving it over a 30 minute period and sometimes when i stop when its cool outside it idles really high and also when i stop sometimes the truck sits there and lunges and idles 4 to 5 different ways in a matter of minutes. also a few points to keep in mind the truck has a 302 bored and stroked to a 347. Ford racing heads and crane lifters and rockers and the cam is a ford racing e303 camshaft. ford racing pistons as well. any help would be greatly apprieciated!

The simplest thing would be to download the trouble codes off the engine computer. That would give you a general idea of why the check engine light is coming on and you could work it from there.

Thats a great idea but it will not continously stay on long enough to grab a code. will it still produce one with the light off?
Yeah, there's something called the keep alive memory (KAM) where all of the trouble codes are stored.
My check engine light comes on only after the engine has warmed up. Downloaded the codes and they gave me a general idea of where to start looking.
There are a couple of "sticky" threads on how to get the On Board Diagnostic #1 ( OBD1) codes just using a jumper wire. They're right at the top of the main page.
It seems complicated at first, but it really isn't after you've done it a couple of times. Just takes a little bit of practice.
