Default AOD Transmission

1993 Ford F150 5.0L AOD trans

Could someone explain the operation of this transmission. It's not the electronically controlled 4 speed OD, it's the AOD with PRNDD1.

In 1st it shifts from 1st to 2nd?
In D it shifts from 1st to 2nd to 3rd (high).
In the second D or OD it shifts from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 4th (OD).

My issue is that in D or OD, it shifts too soon in all gears unless you give it a lot of gas. Under light acceleration it is in 3rd at 20mph and chugging. I see no controls other than the kick down lever/cable, so how does this transmission read speed or load? I'm hoping for a sticking internal valve body, etc. Regardless, please walk through the trans operation and any adjustments or items to maintain.

Thank you.

Thanks. The article was mostly the history of Ford OD transmissions, not much about their function. I need a technical run down.

My '93 has an electronic AOD, however AOD shifts points are still controlled by the TV cable. It sounds like your cable has too much slack in it, which controls the line pressure in the valve body. I'd adjust the cable to remove the slack at the throttle body, and then adjust from there to get your shift points optimized. There are plenty of online videos that show how to adjust the TV cable.

Thanks, that makes sense. I'm used to the kick down doing simply that and the load being read by a vacuum modulator. The cable seems to be the only outside connection, so I'll be sure it's adjusted to specification and report the results.
