Default AOD shifting issues

Hey y’all! Been having issues with shifting and was hoping someone else had the same issue/might have some insight.

The truck is a 1988 F150, 5.0, AOD, 2wd.

Had it for a few months, PO brought it back to life after it sat for 9ish years- needless to say, it’s had its fair share of gremlins to work out.

Its been running and driving fine for a couple months now, but after letting it sit for a few days, I got in, and it wouldn’t get above 30ish mph. Definitely felt like it was slipping bit so I parked it and checked the fluid (which was slightly low while the engine was hot).

It has a very soft shift from 1st to 2nd (I can only tell it’s in second because if you drop from D to 1 on the shifter, it downshifts noticeably), and it continues to pull and pull in 2nd gear, without shifting- there is now no slipping.

I did a fluid change (including torque converter), changed the filter, no change in shifting behavior.

I have pulled the valve body, cleaned each valve train, polished the valves, ran a metal pipe cleaner on a drill through each journal, and ensured they are all moving freely in the journals, removed and cleaned the governor, and reset and ensured the TV cable is set properly each time.

Im really scratching my head and starting to wonder if the clutches are burned up, or if there is something else obvious I’m missing.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Thanks!

Hey there to anyone who may find this post later and be looking for a solution: it was a bad/sticking 2-3 shift valve in the valve body- there were heat marks on the separator plate, and replacing the valve body with a junkyard unit immediately solved the issue.

Thanks for sharing. You are lucky you were able to find that old valve body in a junk yard. Most are long gone by now.

Definitely lucked out- actually had to use one from a Crown Vic/LTD that also had an AOD, so if anyone is looking, don’t limit your search to just the trucks your scrap yard may have. Shift points will be slightly different, but it definitely works!
