Default 4x4 with open rear diff? Really...

ok before I spend $300 on a Spartan locker is it true that I could have an open diff in my 88 4X4? Last winter I was a lil pissed that I got stuck on a small incline when I stopped. Granted there was a foot of snow but in 4wd and Toyo A/T's I would of never expected to get stuck on that minor of a incline.

I haven't pulled the diff cover due to the fact the pervious owner just had the fluid changed before I bought it.

By the way Summit has the Spartan for $300 with $20 summit bucks or the Lock-Right on sale for $310.

Of course its open.... get the locker put it in and be done with it. But if you want to check it without opening, lift the rearend up at the pumpkin, hand turn one wheel in the forward direction, if the other wheel turns in the reverse direction, its open.

Or, if its still all stock, read the tag on the diff or look at your axle code on the door jam sticker.

Just did that and looked it up, the code is 18 with the site I used said it is a conventional non-Positraction Differential 3.06. I'm sure the gear ratio is incorrect on the site cause I have a build sheet straight for Ford that says 3.08.

OK I'm gonna go with the Spartan since it come with a new cross shaft and $20 Summit Bucks.
