4x4 conversion HELP
Im wanting to convert my truck to 4 wheel drive. Can someone give me a list of EVERYTHING i would need to change on the front end? Also, i have a 6 inch lift on it, since i ordered that lift meant for a 2wd truck, would i have to get a different lift after the conversion, or would that lift still work? thanks
A parts truck, easiest and cheapest solution.
You'll need to find the same tranny as what you have but the 4x4 version of it with transfercase (I believe the transmission cross member as well), your rear driveshaft shortened or find one the right length, front axle (rear axle as well if gear ratios aren't the same) and front driveshaft.
4x4 rear leafs are 3" wide compared to 2.5" on the 2x4, these don't need to be swapped but if you want it to look factory you'll need 4x4 leafs, leaf hangers and blocks as well.
It's a very straight forward swap, I've done it on my truck, just easiest to have a 4x4 truck to take parts from, and your lift will still work as long as you don't swap rear leafs, you'll also gain about 2" of lift in the front end with the 4x4 front axle.

okay so my current lift will still work as long as i dont swap the rear leafs, but could i? will it affect driving quality/off-road capabilities if i keep the 2wd leafs back there? also, i have been reading other forums, and people have said a full size bronco will be a better donor than an f150. did you use a 4x4 f150? The reason i am doing this conversion is 1) because i am only 18, and i like to have a little fun in the mud every now and then, 2) all my friends have big 4x4 trucks, and i want to be able to keep up with them
and 3) I will be going to college where the winters are harsh, and just a few days ago where i live, we got ice and i slipped off the road and swiped a tree and that made me wish i had a 4x4. so i am going to make my truck a 4 wheel drive. thanks for the input!

I'd believe the 4x4 leafs would be stiffer then the 2x4 but I don't know, I left my 2x4 leafs in. You could swap leafs and keep the lift but you'd need the wider blocks. Not sure how a bronco would be any easier then a truck as a donor, they definitely aren't as plentiful as trucks are around here. I used an older f150 that a buddy wrote off.
okay so i should just leave the lift as is? after the conversion is done, the front end will be higher than the back end by a couple inches, right? could i take blocks off of a 4x4 back end to level that or should i just buy a 2 inch leveling kit off rough country?
