steering problems
Let me start off by saying the truck is a 96 f150 3 inch body lift on 33s. Okay, so about two days ago I was driving home and I noticed that every time I turned left or right the steering wheel would come back but not all the way to straight. So I figured I was low on power steering fluid,(wasnt very low) so I threw some in there anyways. It was fine after that, then today it started doing it again. So I just threw a little more in, havent tested it out yet. But what could be causing this problem??? The power steering pump doesnt sound any different, or making any weird noises. But one thing I noticed when I went to put new fluid in, is when I took the cap off it smelled like that burnimg electronics smell. Im very stumped and need help quick. Thanks in advanced
So adding fluid fixes the problem?
If you're losing fluid, it's leaking somewhere. Those C2 pumps can leak where the plastic reservoir attaches to the pump body, and the accy bracket can make it hard to see that area, but it should be noticeably wet all around there based upon this much fluid loss in 2 days.
The burnt smell would seem to indicate your pump is in a sad state of affairs, but I wouldn't rush to replace it just yet; it could just mean your fluid is old and PS fluid smells a bit funky anyhow. Figure out where your fluid loss is occurring first.
If you do replace your pump, find a serpentine equipped van and do the Saginaw swap. WORLDS better than the C2 truck pumps. Search the web, lots of write-ups here. There is also a pump available which is the Saginaw that bolts up to your current accy bracket; I just never liked having a proprietary pump so I never pursued this avenue.
