Default Front shock confusion

Why did Ford add a second shock in the front of the
truck? Even on a 150?

way back when they first did this, it was to compete with those "built" trucks from CA that ran a lot of off road and desert races. It was an option for many years, but for most of us - not needed.

I appreciate your input. So this was an option from Ford or aftermarket? It's a 96 Eddie Bauer short single 5.0

It has nothing to do with CA or homebuilt trucks. It's part of the camper/trailer option package from the factory on 4WD F150s. It's commonly referred to as "quad front shocks". Heavier trucks (F250-up) don't need them - their suspension is already designed to handle the extra loads.
