You would have to run something like a 245/45/R20 tire to even fit in the wheel wells.

You can fit what ever size wheel you would Like. I made a assumption that being it was a older truck he was on a budget. I myself have a 89 with 15's because the fact of the matter is offroad tires are cheaper. I have 17" on my 97 and it costs around $1100 for the tires and they are only 33's where as my 89 has 36's and cost around $850.

I do have it lifted 6 in and I still couldn't fit 20x9 wheels and 35 tires?

My truck has 31x10.50s on a 15x10 with 4" BS, roughly -35ish offset. The fronts are just a tad outside the wheel wells, and the rears are dead even with the farthest out part of the flare in my bed, if that helps!
