Default automatic locking hubs?

i just bought a 92 F150 4x4 with auto locking hubs. ive been told by a friend that is more experience that only 2 of my 4 wheels are engaging in 4 wheel drive. my back 2 wheels will engage but my front just will not. im trying to figure out the best way to narrow down what the problem is. this is my first 4 wheel drive vehicle. so this is all very new to me. he suggested i replace the hubs, is it as simple as that? i would imagine theres a little more to it than take one part off put a new part on. thanks.

It sounds like youre auto hubs arent doing their job, which is automatically locking the front tires when you switch to 4x4. Its not uncommon for auto hubs to go bad in our trucks, which is why most people switch to manual locking hubs. I would prefer mile marker or warn manual locking hubs, these seem to work the best. Its not hard to do and theyre not very expensive, there are tons of videos on youtube on how to make the switch on our trucks.
