Default 4.9 won't go past 2000rpm in 5th gear

I have a 1990 f150 xlt lariat and when I am in 5th gear it won't run past 2000 rpm even on flat ground. Is that just how it is or is there something I can do to get it to speed up?

Welcome to the site!

Have you checked the catalytic converter, or does it still have one? If your exhaust at idle or slightly above idle is more of a steady flow rather than a pulsing, may indicate blockage in the cat. I am not aware of any intentional limiting of the RPMs. Also, ensure that your air filter is in good shape - all relating to restrictions of air flow through the motor.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

That is EXACTLY what I thought. I agree with Wde3477.

Use a vacuum gauge to diagnose that CAT. Quick and easy.
