Default wrench warning light on dash while towing

I have a 2014 f150 with a 5.0 engine and a 6 speed transmission. Currently there is about 145,000 miles on the truck. While towing my small fishing boat (boat and trailer weigh about 1500lbs total) from St. Louis to Wisconsin I was going up a slight grade the truck downshifted, then a wrench popped up on my dash right below the speedometer where the gear indicator is normally located. After about 20 seconds the light went off and the tow haul switch deactivated itself. I ran the rest of the way to Wisconsin and back without the tow haul turned on and the truck seemed to run fine.
Any ideas on what this could be?
Planning to call the shop that works on my vehicles later today, just wondering what I might be looking at.

The wrench just means a code was thrown. You could buy a reader, have auto zone check it, or your mechanic.

Could be the transmission but I would guess bad gas or a cylinder misfire. Could be most anything. Hope for bad gas.

so update on the truck. Took it to a local repair shop and the truck ran fine on the way to the shop (of course), they hooked it up to a code reader and it pulled the code P1702 Transmission range circuit failure. The good news is, rather than just blindly throwing parts at the car they recommended I take it to a transmission specialist and because I've been a long time customer they waived the diagnostic charge. The transmission shop said that the code must have been cleared by the previous shop and he couldn't get it to reoccur. I had already told him what the code was and he said it might have something to do with the wiring harness.
He also waived any charges but then suggested I take it to a Ford Dealer.
So I called Ford and the soonest my local dealer can get me in 6/22.
I'll let know how it goes....
