Default Is The Wiring Already There for Towing?

Hi,

I have a new 2018 F-150XL without a Factory Towing Package. However, the truck came with a 4 pin trailer connector already installed at factory. My question is... is there factory wiring already installed at the rear of the truck that includes a Brake Controller line and/or a 7 way harness? If yes, in what location?

Thank you,
Ken

I have been told you will find it over the spare tire.

If the truck has the plug for the brake controller it will be plugged into the back of the little change holder cubby in the dash. I've never seen one that didn't have it.

The weight police will be along shortly to tell you your limited to 500 lb tongue / 5000 lb towing by the fact your truck wasn't factory equipped with a tow package.

And while the Ford brake controller is easily plugged in, you need it activated by the dealer or FORScan.

It isn't the weight police if the truck doesn't have the towing pkg. All of the towing packages add a larger radiator and depending upon the XL options pkg larger fans. You also don't have a hitch receiver on the F-150's without a tow pkg so there is no ability to install a WDH. A lot also depends upon how the XL is equipped. If it has the 3.3L it would require the 3.73 rear end to support anything over 5K lbs. So the truck could be upgraded but we really don't know enough about the truck to determine its limits.

OP here. Will be towing under 5k lbs. Just trying to reconfigure to a 7 blade from the factory 4pin and add a trailer brake controller. Trying to determine the path of least resistance doing so.

thanks,
Ken

I know some of the earlier years used the same main wiring harness for 4-pin and 7-pin. Follow the 4-pin harness back to where it connects to the main harness if you see a blue wire in the connector or taped off then it should be able to handle a 7-pin connector. If you see the blue wire I would expect there to be a connector plugged into the back of the cubbyhole or near the steering column for a brake controller.

OP here. Please view attached pics from the factory connector to factory 4pin harness that I found above frame rail near spare. Note heavy gauge yellow and blue in addition to many other wires on the connector side coming from front of truck. Would a T connector 7 way kit from e- trailer work here?

thanks,
Ken
