When to put the truck into tow mode

The truck pulls my 24' HiLo even with a 300 lb motorcycle in the bed very nicely in 6th unless it's an upgrade or into a moderate to strong headwind. I judge nicely by the transmission staying in 6th with the torque converter staying locked up and normal operating temperatures.

I never use 6th when towing the boat in my sig even though the truck can pull it in 6th and it is probably lighter and less wind resistant than your trailer. I feel like it is both easier on the engine and on my fuel tank to let the engine rev a little closer to peak torque and have the mechanical advantage of the lower gear. Lugging around well under 2k rpms with that kind of load and wind resistance in your case is a bad idea in my humble opinion.
