Default Trailer Questions

Purchased a brand-new trailer for hauling ATVs last year. It was made in 2012, but has less than 100 miles on it and was sitting at a dealer quite awhile. Perfect shape, looks like it was made yesterday. It has wheel grease fittings and I was wondering if I necessarily need to hit those fittings because the trailer is 4 years old or should I just go by miles on the trailer itself and wait quite awhile.

a little extra grease never hurt anyone. i usually check and grease my toyhauler once a year just before the start of the desert season.

If it has been sitting four years, inspect the tires for any weather cracking. If the rubber seems fresh you are good to go.

Inspected the tires on purchase and they are fine.

I grease my trailer bearings every season. Why would you not grease them regardless of milage?

Cost. Costs me about $150/axle
I grease about every second year.

Apologies, I thought you were talking about hitting the bearings with a grease gun (like "Bearing Buddies") or something like that. Yea, $100/season is kinda steep! Good luck.

Even with trailer axles that including bearing buddies, I prefer to remove the wheel bearings and repack them with wheel-bearing grease every couple of years. Plain ole grease gun grease is not good enough.


A few years ago I was returning home from the Northwest via Phoenix. Between Phoenix and Lordsburg NM I had a wheel bearing failure. By the time I got to Lordsburg, the axle was toast. So I limped in and parked in a KOA, then drove to El Paso to buy a new axle. After that experience I'm now more adamant about packing the wheel bearings before they "need" it,
