Default trailer harness

I have a 2017 F150 and work from the bed alot! can i use the trailer harness and hook up a dc to ac inverter and not worry about the gauge of wire? To clarify I will only be running a dewalt 20V charger or my surface pro 4. Not running heavy equipment.

It most likely wont work since it needs to detect the trailer connection and only while key is on. After key is off it is on a timer and will turn off automatically. You can run a 10 ga wire from the battery along the passenger side, it is rather easy to do too. I did that myself, but haven't found the right outlet that I want to use terminate it with.

I always keep the truck running while in the field as I work remote and do not like tempting Murphy and not having the truck start on me when I am ready to head out. I know paranoia, but beats 10 to 20 mile walks....
so you don’t think it will work... grrr, was hoping to not have to run new wires as this is a leased work truck....

With the truck running use a multimeter to check for voltage on the charge line.

Alternatively I would have a second Deep Cycle battery installed with a solenoid to isolate. The most pratical idea would be to buy a small used genny...

You could just pick up a DC-AC inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I have one of those for my truck and it does fine with small loads. The circuit is already fuse protected and everything.

If that doesn't work, you're only talking about adding 1 wire the length of the truck. Just make sure you protect it with wire loom or similar, use an in-line fuse and a simple switch at the end so you don't drain the battery.
