Trailer brake module fault

2016 2.7 XLT 4x4 sportRecently got a trailer (7pin). Installed the brake controller in the dash JL3Z-2C006-AA. Dealer flashed the controller on (tried to charge $130)

My truck will now say "Trailer Brake Module Fault" every time is starts and so often. With or without a trailer. It does see the trailer connected and does show pressure applied to trailer brakes and I can change the gain.... but seemingly doesn't work. The manual squeeze brake does nothing.

I did check all trailer related fuses under hood and inside kick panel, all good.

Did I install the wrong controller? Did they screw up the flash?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if the dealer screwed up but you do need to check the output at the connector to see if it is working up to there. I would think the dealer would do that after making a program change to be sure it worked. My WAG is the programming wasn't complete or successful. Why not ask if somebody close to you has FORscan and can check for you. If you look in Livinitup's spreadsheet the lines for adding a brake controller and how to set them to make active are given. Very first post click on the link, when you get to the tutorial scroll down to the bottom of the first paragraph and click on that link, You'll find brake controller listed in there. There are two lines that need to be enabled.

Another thing, why are you taking pictures of your dash with your phone at 80MPH? Pay attention to the road!

Relax, my wife took the pic. She did unbuckle to do it, ill give her a proper thwarting for you :)

Ill look into the livinitup thing. Thanks

Jacked the trailer up today and the brakes are working with the pedal. The squeeze brake does nothing. Still getting the error.

May try a used trailor control module and see if that works.

Open the link. If you look at lines 84 & 85, a change needed to line 84 enables the brake controller. A change to line 85 enables the gain. You have no gain (squeeze brake). Go back to the dealer and get it enabled. FYI the dealer uses a program called IDS. I don't know if the code files read the same in that program but print and take this with you to show them.

Man I hope you are right. It sucks waiting there for hours and they always try to screw you (pun intended!)

Ill report back. Thanks

Ugh nightmare! Another long dealer visit just for them to say the brake module is faulting

Then the whole "who put the brake controller in" .....your fault etc etc and OF COURSE my warranty literally just expired (time, not miles)

So they just wanted to throw money at it and I cant do that.

:help:

Bought a $50 used brake module and I hope it works. Super easy to swap. Fingers crossed.

Oops

I'd like to hear their explanation of how installing the brake controller yourself cause the problem. Ask them to provide installation documentation that warns against plugging the module in without performing other tasks, because they are truly full of ****.

They couldn't figure it out, and wanted to shift blame to you.

Either they did not perform the update properly, or the module you installed is defective.

If I was concerned about there being an issue with an owner installing a component, I would not let my techs perform a software update. Their response conflicts with their actions.

Thanks. Unfortunately it's always something at the dealer

I ordered a used module, hopefully it comes in soon. I'll swap it out and report back.
