Default Trailer brake controller install questions

I recently purchased a 2019 f150 without a brake controller. I pull a trailer almost daily, so I ordered an aftermarket one and forscan cable and installed it myself.

When you test it, you can feel the brakes engage, but a “trailer disconnected” warning pops up. Clearly it’s not disconnected, and clearly it’s working because you can adjust the gain and feel them engage.

However, I get this warning, and also the “output” section on the dash never lights up. Is this because I used an aftermarket controller, or did I miss something in forscan? Thanks

Yes. It’s the aftermarket controller. You cannot integrate them with the truck like you can the OEM units. Forscan doesn’t do anything for aftermarket.

Oem is the best one you’ll get. Make sure you don’t get the cheap knock off either.

Oem will show the gain output, allow you to select gain, sensitivity and will be velocity sensitive.

Edit: I think your issue is you selected the items in forscan and didn’t use an OEM unit.

either turn off the 3 settings in forscan, or get an OEM unit.

so it has to be a ford one? It’s an in dash one I got but I’m sure it’s a cheapo. When I squeeze the lever thing, I feel it activate. I assume it just isn’t working automatically while driving due to the truck not liking it being a knock off?

Guess that’s what I get for trying to save a few bucks.

It’s been pretty well documented here that the cheap knock off version of the oem can have issues. The oem unit will cost $120+. Order from a reputable online Ford seller.
