Towing Experience 5.0 Engine - New Generation Truck vs 2013
I currently have a 2013 Crewcab, 5.0 engine, 6-speed tranny, 3.55 gearing. More than half of the use of the truck is for towing a 5500 lbs bumper pull camper. We take trips here and there, mountains and beaches. I am curious to know the experiences of those that have towed with the previous generation of F150, 5.0 engine and have purchased a 2015+ rig with the 5.0 engine and 10 speed tranny and now tow with it. I like the 5.0 engine and want to stay with it. I would probably add the 3.73 gears if I went looking for a new truck. Can you rate your experience as "better towing" (and why) or, "about the same". I would say that my 2013 is decent but always open to improvement, where cost effective.

I can't say first hand but I have ridden in a 1st Gen 5.0 while towing, had a 16 Gen 2 5.0 6 speed and I currently have a newer (18) with the Gen 3 5.0 and 10 speed. I know the 10 speed is much better for towing with all the extra ratios to find one in the power band much easier. Also the newer 5.0 has more HP and torque across the whole rpm range. Win Win. I am very happy with mine.

I think the 10 speed is huge for the 5.0. It helps it stay at the optimal rpm for the conditions.

18 5.0 with 3.73. Power is more than adequate towing 8,000, bakes are best so far. Only issue is the tire sidewalls are a bit flimsy with the OE Michelins and the rear could use a swaybar from the factory.

You'll also gain more payload depending on trim level. My 18 tows our camper better than the 15. Same truck but the 18 has 20" wheels, the 15 had 18" with e rated tires.

Went from a 13 to 18 but both of mine had the 3.5. The 10 speed is a game changer. My 18 has about 400 pounds more payload with a better trim package, and the FX-4 package that the 13 didn't have.

I have towed an 18', heavy duty, solid deck trailer loaded with a 2900lb car with my 2018 5.0, and it has been fantastic. I can barely feel anything back there. I have also towed the same trailer with a 1991 F150 5.0/E4OD and the empty trailer alone was more than noticeable.
