Towing with the 4.2l
Hi, All I have a 07 short bed, reg cab, 2wd, f150, with a 4.2l v6 in it. The truck is a 5 speed manual so the tow rating is only 3700lb. I have a ski boat that is that heavy or maby more.
I'm wondering if any one would know, how it would tow it?
I just cant believe how low the towing capacity is I mean come on ford my S-10 could tow more.
I only tow the boat 3 or 4 miles two times a year we usually drive slow. I know its not going to tow like my old silverado with the 350. I guess I'm just concerned sense I saw how low the tow rating is. I would think the truck would tow like a silverado with a 4.3l. Sorry I have been around a lot of chevy trucks.

my 02 reg cab 6.5' bed with 4.2 and auto is rated at 6700 but it has 355 gears with limited slip, towed my 28' 5250lbs camper fine for a few years,I'd bet it would tow with no problems, pulling a steep ramp with water on it might give you a fit though

Yeah, it's the manual tranny/clutch. GCWR 8,500 and tow rating of 3,700. Same truck (regular cab shorty with 3.55 axle) with automagic tranny has GCWR of 10,000 pounds and tow rating of 5,100, or 1,400 pounds more tow rating.
I'd just tow with like it is, and if you burn up the clutch then replace the clutch with a heavier-duty aftermarket clutch.
