Default Power Reduced to Lower Engine Temp

So I was towing my utility trailer yesterday with my UTV on it when this came up on my dash about an hour into a drive. It was about 80 degrees yesterday, if that makes any difference. The trailer weight is only about 2500# and it was pretty flat with minimal hills. I am running a 5* 87 octane performance/tow tune. The coolant level is fine and the trans temp was between 210 and 218 when this happened. I tow a lot with much bigger trailers, but shorter distances and have never had seen this before. My truck is a 2017 3.5 SCREW with the Max Tow package. My truck is out of warranty by about 1000 miles as well. TIA.

It might be the tune causing it. Run premium next time and see if it makes a difference. Were you in Tow/Haul mode? If not, then the 87 octane, and performance tune would definitely cause it to run hot. Without being in T/H, the tune doesn't know you are towing, and will do it's best to give max power for performance, and not for dropping a gear to put the engine into a more efficient power band needed, and basically lugs the engine which requires more fuel, more boost, and end result, more heat.

I am pretty sure that I was, but I will try that next time. I will contact 5* in the mean time as well.

Datalog. If it looks chaotic you may have a loose or bad CHT Sensor.

yeah.....ditch the 87 performance/tow tune. Once the factory intercooler heatsoaks, all that timing will be pulled and it'll make less power.
I'd run the stock tune over any 87 'performance' tune...waste of money. You could try an adaptive tune, but like others said, i'd run 93. Truck will run way, way better on it anyway.

Also...check the shutters and make sure they're opening.

What is a CHT Sensor and how hard is it to replace? Since I'm out of warranty, I would like to fix it myself if possible.

I used to run a 91 performance/tow tune, but when the price of 87 went down so low and 91 didn't, I switched tunes. 93 isn't readily available where I live unfortunately, otherwise I would be using that instead. Next time I am towing that longer of a distance and its warm out, I will run the stock tune.

The first thing I would do is call up the dealer and see if you can extend the warranty.
The second thing I would do is go back to stock tune and run 91 octane minimum. I can attest to the fact that with my truck running 93 octane I get over 3mpg better during the same driving conditions I ran 87 octane.
So the overall cost of the higher octane is offset to the point where I am probably not spending more money.
