I'm new to this forum. I've had trucks and trailers for many decades. I have an 06 F150 4.2l. I just got a 21' travel trailer. My truck doesn't appear to have the factory tow package, but has a resse hitch, and four pin flat connector. I switched it to a seven pin , to match the trailer. I found the trailer brake connector under the dash, and see a blue ,and orange wire at the rear frame. Can it be that easy to hook them up, or are there parts missing/ not connected IE relays etc?

If your F-150 does not have a trailer tow pkg, then the main thing you need is a tranny cooler and a motor oil cooler. The easiest to install tranny cooler is the OEM Ford tranny cooler that was part of the trailer towing pkg on your F-150. It should bolt right up. Or an aftermarket tranny cooler will work too. Here's one:

For an oil cooler, one easy way is to install a "pancake adapter" between the oil filter and the block, then mount the heat exchanger anywhere it will fit. Then run hydraulic lines between the pancake adapter and the heat exchanger.
And while you're at it, install a tranny temp gauge with the sender in the pan of the tranny, and an oil temp gauge. The red line for the tranny temp gauge is 225° sump temp, and anything over about 210° tells you that your tranny is getting too too hot. If you often see over 210°, then you need a bigger heat exchanger.
I am a pretty good electrician when it comes to wiring a house, but I hate automotive wiring, so I don't do it. So I won't attempt to answer your wiring questions. On my '99.5 F-250 I ordered the tow pkg on the new pickup, which included all the wires and relays and fuses needed to wire the 7-pin RV plug at the back of the pickup. Long before the '96 model year, that pkg was standard, including the 7-pin plug and the receiver hitch on F-250s. On my 2012 F-150 Lariat, the regular trailer tow pkg, including the receiver, 7-pin RV plug, tranny cooler and oil cooler, were standard. And I ordered the factory integrated trailer brake controller installed at the factory. So I haven't needed to mess with any wiring on my pickups for many years.
Between the '99.5 F-250 and the 2012 F-150, I inherited a 2003 F-150 4.6L V8 without a tow pkg. I had my Ford dealer install the OEM tranny cooler. I had my local hitch retailer install the brake controller and the 7-pin plug at the back of the pickup. But that pickup was a dog for towing, so I traded it for an F-150 EcoBoost with a lot more power and torque.
