Do you suppose the self appointed forum weight police will ever realize no one cares what they think? This thread is like a broken record whenever someone posts up a pic of a large camper, lol! Cracks me up

I get what you're saying and it certainly can seem like a broken record being brought up over and over but i still think their is some value in repeatedly going through the motions. unfortunately most of us are likely pretty familiar that a trailer dealer will sell you anything they can and many times the salesman at the ford dealers either aren't knowledgeable enough to be able to correctly advice a customer of their payload and towing capacity or willfully mislead customers. I've seen enough people here not realize how over they are on one particular number until someone brought up the likely hood of them being over.

now some people certainly don't care about how over they are, some have full knowledge and carefully sought out a trailer that was within their specs, and others are perfectly aware of how over they are and fell comfortable with it. I think it still helps some people and it's at best a minor annoyance for anyone else.

my gut feeling when i see a screw platinum with that large of a camper is that they are over because there are quite a few that only have 1050 pds of payload capacity... I'm sure someone sees his rig, doesn't have the exact same set up but it's a platnium screw and they assume they can safely pull that camper too. for that person, unless they seek out the knowledge independently (and know what to seek out) who's gonna offer than advice if it's not done here? just another way to think about it

Has anyone ever heard of an insurance company denying a claim due to someone towing beyond the manufacturer's documented specs ? This is one of the worst case scenarios I'd worry about. I've never heard of it personally...

I do suppose you have a valid point, newcomers aren't likely to read all 240 some pages.

Thanks for all the concern both direct and indirect.

Let's keep in mind this is the "let's see your campers being towed" thread. I will remind that in this entire thread from start to finish everyone who has expressed concerned about someone's setup, including mine have this in common: They've never driven my truck, with my hitch, with my trailer attached to it. Before I put this together I did hours of research on the units involved and didn't choose this route because it looked pretty.

Speculation does nothing for this discussion guys. I am more than happy to chat over PM on the exact specifics of my situation and will absolutely take advice but that's not why I posted a photo.

I haven't either... I don't mean this as rude, but i think the largest concern would be killing or injuring someone, then damaging something, then whether an insurance company covering something. I think we'd all agree that there has to be some safety margin built into these number but how much is it?... overloading the rear axle is likely lightening the front axle in many cases (obviously not all cases) and that effects steering and braking drastically. the more you pull the farther it takes to stop a truck even within it's specs and after safety, these are $50k trucks and towing much of anything has to wear them out more quickly... towing over spec has to exaggerate it.

I'm actually not one of the weight police people. I'm a couple hundred pds over payload with my current trailer. I'm not saying being slightly overloaded is the end of the world... it's not. I would trust some people on the road being quite overloaded, but the people i would trust, don't need to be reminded that they are overloaded or what could happen from them being overloaded. I get in the mode that everyone knows what their truck can do and how to tow safely but honestly we all know that's not even close to the truth.

I bet there are more people that think they can hook up to a 10k trailer because the ford commercials say you can, then there are people that ever consider payload. it certainly gets annoying, but a lot of people have no idea but they have a truck and want to get a camper or they want to tow their daughter's full house worth of stuff across the country, blah, blah, blah. they are on the road with you and me sometimes learning the hard way how to tow or maybe getting by fine and telling other people new to towing not to worry about it because they are magically an expert because they have almost 3k miles of towing experience.

I definitely get tired of seeing capacity related/weight police posts but if it helps someone make a better choice, I'll deal with my frustration and even post of weight police like posts myself.

I would like this thread to be nothing but pics of trucks and trailers but obviously some people have questions/comments. You're 100% right that we don't know the specs for your truck or hitch and I can certainly understand that, since your someone who was responsible and researched what they can tow and what they need to tow it, it's insulting for someone to question your set up. If you don't want to air it discuss it on the forum, I can understand that too, but I imagine, you're helping people by explaining that you're not over spec because of this that or the other thing, rather than a bunch of screw platinum owners seeing your rig and assuming they can do the same thing, when it's somewhat common for those to only have 1k pds of payload capacity.

Deleted post because it didn't have a truck/camper picture.
