Default How does the tow/haul button work?

Hello--I'm brand new to F150s and am learning how real trucks work. My understanding of the tow/haul button is that it locks out the higher transmission speeds to reduce the heat in the transmission. But when I press the tow/haul button I can see in the information window that all 6 speeds are still available for use. I can also block out speeds even when tow/haul is not engaged. I'm left wondering how this exactly works?

BTW, I did read that with this button engaged the truck will automatically downshift to facilitate engine braking when going down hill. That's a very cool feature.

Thank you.

Dosent lock out any gears. It will move the shift point though to optimize for towing or hauling. The auto down ahifting is very handy but it will surprise you the first time your breaking in a grade and it drops a gear or three.

You can still manualy lock out gears by pressing the "-" on the shifter in conjunction with t/h button.

Ya when it downshifted on me during a down hill curve and hitting the brake lightly it was quite the surprise. Not sure thats what I want.

It's in your owner's manual. There's lots of interesting reading in there.

If everyone read their manuals, this board would die.

Well, the manual doesn't address whether the Ecoboost is better than the 5.0, so we'd still have that!

It is a given that the 5.0 is way better at sucking more gas.. You have to love the argument none the less.

Don't I know, my 4 door 5.0/ 3.73 has yet to break the 21mpg barrier at 70 on the hwy and I only average 11.2 towing my 7500# TT.

You meant at sucking air right? (That's a joke before you get all riled up!)
