Default How do I know the Tow Capacity?

Hi folks:

I just joined this forum as I am in the market for a new towing vehicle. I am moving up to campers with a 5500 - 7500 GVWR. Currently, I have a ~2800 pop up and tow that with a Tacoma. The Tacoma has a 6500 pound capacity for towing

As I search on line for F150's I can't tell what can tow what...Do I have to head over to a dealer? Which is fine, but I am on vacation looking so just trying to figure out what's out there.

I want to be in the ~10,000 pound towing capacity to have room and leave options open. Looking to stay used with a $25k max price.

edit: overlooked your comment you preferred used. Google 20xx F-150 towing capacity and you'll find a similar link for every model year. There are also threads in f150forum.com for specific year towing.

Make sure you consider PAYLOAD. It is where many 1/2 ton owners get taken by RV salesmen. My truck has a 10, 200 pound tow capacity but given the tongue weight of my 7500 lb travel trailer and my 2003 lb payload I'm nearly overweight with my family and a few small items in the bed.

Additionally, the dry tongue weights listed by trailer manufacturers is also very understated. Doesn't include propane tanks or batteries.

You need to be looking at 3/4 ton diesels. You can find 1/2 tons that will do that, but they are not common. I just spent 2 months looking at new and used trucks and never found a single 1/2 ton that was set up to pull that much weight. It would have had to been ordered from the factory.

If you limit yourself to about 8000 lbs there are lots of 1/2 ton options.

I think he will be looking for a TT with a weight between 5500 - 7500 lbs

He wants a 10,000 lbs capacity, but only wants to tow 5500 - 7500 lbs, which is a perfect fit for a Max Tow F-150.

You don't need a diesel, 3/4 ton maybe but that's debatable.

The OP may not need a diesel, but he will surely need a 3/4-ton Chassis to meet his stated future ~10,000 lb capability goal, and Still have enough headroom fer safety and ancillary cargo/people.

Towing on the ragged edge of a vehicle's ratings is never a good idea.

Used F250, 6.2L gasser will do this job with a nice capability buffer. Not gunna discuss mileage though. Or price.

The OP wants to tow a maximum of a 7,500 lb trailer. Why is everyone telling him to get a 250? An F150 will tow that just fine.
