I saw a supposedly Half-Ton Towable being delivered this morning.
1. No Propane (Just the deflector) 2. No Batteries (at least in view) 3. Weight Distributing Hitch (could have used another link or two). 4. Ram 3500 Crewcab Dually 4x4
I'm starting to think the term "half ton towable" is a lot like the laugh track on a sitcom. We think you are too stupid to get our non funny jokes so we'll add laughter and try to get you to join in.
Half ton towable is advertising speak to get somebody to literally BUY in against their concerns of towing a heavy/long RV trailer. And you must equip your half ton with the maximum factory towing/Payload packages to actually tow it somewhat comfortably.
When I see the term, half ton towable, I know it's really not! Otherwise, they wouldn't have to push the concept. Like Smart Car. Yeah, right.
While I don't disagree that it's marketing hype, I have a '1/2 ton towable' and have so far logged about 1200 miles without issue. Last weekend's trip included 25mph cross winds while going up and down mountains while headed to, and returning from, Show Low, AZ. I have zero squat, and honestly have yet to experience any push, pull, suck or shove when I'm passed by a semi. Braking has also been fine to this point, with my TBC set to 6.
I, like many others was ignorant, didn't do my due diligence and fell for the salesman's BS. Would I like a 3/4 or 1 ton - absolutely! However, if you drive responsibly, ensure your rig is set up properly, particularly your WDH, and are not breaking any of your truck's ratings, I think you can have an enjoyable towing experience with your 1/2 ton, even towing heavy.
How about this? No towing parameters have been exceeded in this example. I have over 6000 miles pulling this through 14 states in the last year.
I think you missed the point.
It jacked the front end up on an 8' Bed Crew Cab that weighed well over 8000 lb with an engine just shy of 3/4 ton while squatting the back end
intended for a 5,000+ lb Payload that was equipped with a WDH.
But I get what you are saying. Last year there was this toy hauler that had a GVWR of 10K, a really long stretch between the ball and front axle, so right away I can see this would be a tongue heavy pig, then overheard the "salesman" say it was 1/2 ton towable. I gave him a withering look, turned to the guy asking the question and said, no, it is NOT, and a 3/4 ton would have a bad day with it, you need a dually for this bad boy, and walked away. Unloaded I would be surprised if it was less than 15% TW with how long it was between the ball and axles.
At another show, there was another trailer claiming to be 1/2 ton towable, but it clearly was not, the GVWR was 11K. When I talked to the salesperson on it, she claimed it to have 900 pound tongue weight. Oh? Really? Mind if I get my TW scale out of my truck and check? Yeah, didn't think so. I walked the circuit and passed that same trailer later and the 1/2 ton sign was gone.
Rule of thumb on any of these claims, verify before trust. If the tongue weight @13% is more than 1200 pounds, it's not suited for a half ton truck. 5th wheels, well not many 1/2 tons have the payload for one of those. Usually with those trailers rated at 1/2 ton, they usually are, for specific trucks like the HDPP.
