What hit you, a small car? Its amazing the tailgate is barely scratched.

I almost smoked a chick in a 98 Subaru Legacy who decided to make a left turn through an intersection as I was driving through it at 35 mph. Luckily I cut the wheel hard right and gave myself just enough room to miss her but that would have been a bad day for her. I bet my truck weighs 2x what her car did.

Just looking at the truck as it set in the tow company yard, the adjuster came up with about $8000 in repairs, including the rental car and towing.
Nothing on the estimate about frame damage. They'll have to get it to the repair shop to determine that. At $8000 repairs plus diminished value, my guess is if there is any drive train or frame damage, we will be getting very close to totaling it. They also would include the salvage value. From the bed forward, the truck is in very good condition.
The driver of the wrecker was the one who mentioned bent frame. If he had not said anything, I probably wouldn't have even given it a thought.
I have alerted the insurance company that I tow a large TT and won't be willing to accept a diminished tow capacity.
Supposed to move to the repair shop today or tomorrow.
We'll see what they find when they tear it down. I know the owner from past experience and intend to drop by after he gets the truck and visit with him about my concerns.
We'll see what happens.
There isn't much research that can be had on DV, only other folks numbers. I've only concluded though my accidents that it's roughly 20%-30% of the total cost to repair. If it's at $7k in repairs (other monies spent isn't included in DV such as rental and tow) that's $1.5k-$2k in DV. They will spend upwards of $16k to fix it (using your $20k value.) Based on numbers and that single photo, my guess is they will be repairing it and in my experience you don't get much (if any) say in the matter.

"They also would include the salvage value. From the bed forward, the truck is in very good condition."

What do you mean by this? I'm intrigued. If it becomes a salvaged title, that would mean they determined it was a total loss.

Talking about the amount they would get selling to a salvage. The EB with 85k is valuable. If the transmission is OK, it is valuable.
All the doors, glass, seats, wheels, etc are good. Just whatever that value they get from a salvage yard would be part of the equation.

It was a 2014 Avalon. She was traveling at a fairly high rate of speed (for a left turn lane) and got sideswiped by a car cutting through traffic to make a left turn. I was setting still waiting for a redlight to change.
She did not even have a chance to hit her brakes.
When she got hit from the side, it turned her car about 45 degrees to the right and planted her grill in the corner of my bed.
I would estimate she was doing between 40 and 50, as she was racing to make a left turn light before it changed.
The guy who hit her (and who is at fault) had no insurance.
I was the only one who wasn't doing anything stupid or illegal and I'm going be out my deductible, unless State Farm can get it back from him on a payment schedule.
Here's a picture of the Avalon.

The blows, so many idiot drivers. At least everyone is alright and you have insurance to take care of it one or the other.

Do you plan to buy it back if it's totaled?

That sedan looks like scrap to me.

The Avalon is definitely totaled. It got hit twice. There isn't even much on it that would be good for salvage.

I won't buy it if it is totaled. I plan to take the cash and either buy another half ton or look at possibly moving up to a 3/4 ton.
Not sure if I'll go back to Ford or not. Not happy with my local Ford dealer/Shop.
I need something to pull my travel trailer and we've been talking about upgrading the TT, and that would require a new tow vehicle. Stopping by the Collision Center tonight to sign authorization. I'll visit with them about my concerns on hidden damage are.

I don't get why insurance companies don't make you keep the damaged vehicle at your house. All they are doing is racking up storage fees from the tow yard. I always have mine towed home. That way I know everything that is going on with it.

Not everyone can have a beat up car at their house, that could be leaking fluids, have broken glass etc. If an accident is bad enough, the tow truck driver has to take it back to their yard when the owner is incapacitated.

Better to leave it up to folks to decide where they want it.

Its called leverage! If they have possession, they feel they have control over you. They also save money if its their salvage lot.

When I was hit by Fedex truck,I had it towed to a dealer. Their adjuster requested to move it to their salvage lot to save money. Since all negotiations were going well, I allowed it.

On Friday night, I let the wrecker driver take it wherever he wanted.
Once the insurance company became involved, they moved it to the repair shop of my choosing.
I would have let them move it wherever they wanted.
It is on the insurance company's nickel.
Once the costs exceed my deductible, costs aren't my concern.
This was MY insurance company, since I have to claim under my un-insured motorist policy.
If it had been the other person's insurance company, I would have cared where it went. Either way, it ends up at a repair shop of my choosing.
