Default Factory brake controller?

I have a 2013 SCab XLT 5.0 with tow package. I do not have the factory brake controller. If I buy a factory controller, is it just plug and play? Someone told me it would not work right because the computer is programmed different in the trucks with the factory brake controller, but that didn't sound right to me. Figured I'd ask here. Thanks in advance for the help.

It's not plug 'n play, the computer needs to be re-flashed to recognize it.

bought my 2013 STX a few weeks ago.. had the dealer add the factory brake controller.. the whole deal.. controller, install and all.. $300. I like it much better than the after market, under the dash controller. This one looks very clean in the dash. (I had a prodigy in previous truck.. worked fine)

and yes.. you get brake controller info on the LED screen.. pretty cool. Every time the system check cycles it shows the trailer brake "connected" or "no trailer connected".. and shows the "gain" setting.

Also with the screen you can program different trailers in with different gain and it will keep track of the trailer/hauling miles too. It also has a check list for hooking the trailer up if you dig into it a little...asking if you hooked the chains, hitch, brakes, mirrors adjusted...stuff like that. Pretty cool feature.
