Default Equipping to Tow

I bought my 2020 F150 STX off the lot and I like nearly everything about it.

It has a 5.0, 3.31 locking axle, tow package, 2049 CCC.

I want to make a few changes:

Can I have 3.73 gears put in? Will Ford do the swap? What can I expect to pay?

I need to add a brake controler and tow mirrors..

I have thought about ordering a F250 with the 6.2 and 4.30 gears. I can equip it like my F150 adding the tow mirrors, brake controller, BLIS and a couple other things I want for about 47k. Carvana made me a great offer on the F150 so I would end up owing about 10k more when its all done.

If your thinking about a factory ordering a 250 I'd do it. You'd likely spend 3-4K with the additions your talking about to the 150.

2049# is plenty of CCC.

Im planning on towing a TT in high elevations and I dont think the 3.31s are not up to the task.

Its beyond me why Ford puts on a towing package with the optional 3.31 locker but doesnt include the $160 camper package that adds a rear sway bar and upgrades the front springs.

3.55s or 4.30s cost the same as the 3.31s.

My truck has the pro trailer backup assist, but didnt come with any of the other towing goodies.

I may go with a gasser 250 or 350. I will think on it for a bit.

Bottom line, it all depends on what you are towing and weights. a 17' TT that weighs 4000# loaded, or a 25' that weighs 7000# loaded? The 10sp trans offers great help to the low end.

But you didn't say what kind of travel trailer you are towing. Is the F250 really needed? Are you ever going to step up to a fifth wheel trailer? What is your yearly mileage without towing?

I've got a F250 diesel and a F150 STX for everyday driving. If I was going to tow relatively heavy, I'd go a F350 single rear wheel with a 7.3 Godzilla motor. If someone doesn't tow that much and they use a F250 as a daily driver, the 6.2 is the engine to get. But the limitations on any 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton truck is the weight carrying capability in the bed--king pin weight for fifth wheels.

Im planning on 12k a year. 5-7k towing, 5k as my daily. I want to tow a trailer in the 7000# range. My 5.0 is up to the task, but Im not happy with the 3.31s, even with the 10 speed.

I made a 2000 mile trip pulling a empty U-Haul 5x7 box trailer and on even in the mountains of North Georgia I could tell the tailer was back there. On flat road, no problem.

Im looking over the options. I want to camp in Yosemite and Rocky Mountain National Park. Maybe travel E to W on Hwy 2. Lots of mountain driving.

As i look over the Super Duty lineup, maybe I will be a used King Ranch, Im in love with the interior, but not enough to fork over the cash for a new one.

Its your money.
Adding the factory ITBC is simple. Wiring is there with the tow package. Almost plug & play, Forscan mod needed for full integration. Unit is under $150, only time I’ve ever seen an after delivery factory option CHEAPER!
Tow mirrors are costly for factory, aftermarkets are $210 and up, under $300 for 8 pin units. Easy install.
2021 Ford does not have 3.55 axle with a 5.0. I think any decent mechanic should be able to install the 3.73 gears for $1500, anything over $2000 is a rip off. Keep in mind, a 4x4 would have to change front gears. When Ford had the 3.55 option with 5.0, standard HD towing package had the 3.31 and Max Tow wasn’t available with the 5.0. It seems the 10 speed transmission is being counted on to be able to use the more MPG friendly rear gearing, in general and for towing.
Recently, until 2021, Ford did not include the ITBC with the towing package, just the MaxTow. They haven’t included tow mirrors with any F150 tow package for several years.

I’ll have to investigate this $160 camper package. I was unaware of any rear anti sway bar option from Ford.

I agree you have plenty of payload, especially without a HDPP. I thought mine was great and you just had to have more! Without HDPP,

oh, and between us, Uhaul trailers are built VERY heavy to take the abuse of a lot of towing newbies over many years. A third, give or take, of the trailer weight capacity is the empty trailer.

Ford hasn’t offered a camper package for quite a while. They now use the Heavy Duty Payload Package for slide in truck campers. As far as I can find, or in this case, cannot find, there is no Ford F-150 rear stabilizer or anti sway bar for 13th or 14th generation trucks.

Probably not worth regearing. And an F150 with the 6.2 and 3.73 gears is enough for most people. Fuel mileage isn't that much worse than the 5.0 in a F150 but it will pull a much heavier trailer. Going to 4.30 gears will get you into single digit fuel mileage in city driving.
