Brake Controllers
I towed for many years with my tekonsha prodigy, including mounting it in the cubby of my 2009. My 2016 came with the OEM unit. The tekonsha worked very well, but the OEM unit beats it for sensitivity and smarts. For example, the IBC eases up the trailer brake power as the truck stops ( drops to about 10-20% force right as the wheels stop turning) to keep any jerking to a minimum. The tekonsha couldn't know the wheel speed and make that adjustment. If You don't own the P3 already, get the IBC. If you already have the P3, only you can decide if the Ibc is worth it.
I just bought my new 2017 last week and they charged me $250 for the controller, installed in about 20 minutes while I was doing the paperwork. Much nicer and cleaner than the big Prodigy sticking out on my previous truck. I haven't taken the trailer out yet, however.
I know there were a few different model numbers on the TBC, did we figure out what the newest version/generation is? I'm in the market to buy one and wanted to make sure I got the good one that didn't have any problems.
I added the factory integrated brake controller and I am very happy with it. I bought a blue tooth ODB2 adapter and used FORscan to activate the controller.
This week I hauled my 6000lb trailer over Kenosha Pass and Crow Hill here in Colorado with 7% grade and was very pleased with the performance of the braking.

Up until I bought my F150 I used a Prodigy P2 brake controller. Worked great. I have only towed my TT once with the F150 but setting up the ITBC was easy and I took it up a steep grade hill it handled just as good as the P2. Honestly I couldn't tell you the difference between the two except that the trailer brakes weren't as over sensitive when using the P2 versus the Ford controller. I will need more mileage to make a fully informed opinion but I am happy enough for now.
The good news is if I start having issues with the ITBC (none so far) then I can remove it and wire up the P2.
