Default Brake controller dealer install

Hello,
New to this site and our first Ford truck 2017 F-150 XL STX. We purchased this truck to tow a camper. It does not have a brake controller in it, we were going to have the dealer install one for us. We spoke to customer service they quoted $240 for the controller and installation so we made the service appointment. We got a phone call from the service department this morning saying they don't have the controller in stock and the price was now $257 for the controller which is on back order until mid July plus $250 labor to install. Being on a fixed income just wondering if we have any other options of getting one in the truck, I would really like to have the OEM controller but that's pretty steep for us. any suggestions would be appreciated!

You can buy one yourself and install, it’s not hard. They’re about $120-150 and find someone with Forscan software to program it, or have the dealer only do the program part. Or if you have a laptop, buy the adapter cord and do the program yourself.

It’s all pretty straightforward. I just installed mine a few months ago and it works great.

Just don’t get the knock off aftermarket controller.

I HIGHLY recommend the oem controller over anything aftermarket. It’s velocity sensitive so it doesn’t grab hard when going slow, integrated with the dash, shows gain, etc. you can select gain plus three levels of sensitivity.

I had an aftermarket controller before and it was junk compared to this.

Thanks! Starting to think that this might be our only option. upon my initial search for controllers I found a wide range of controllers from $50 to $250 all claiming to be OEM. Hard to tell what Im getting, maybe Ill pay the $250 and get direct from Ford. Thanks for your help! Mark

Make sure it’s from an authorized Ford dealer on Amazon or eBay and it’ll be legit. $30-under $100 are knock offs that have issues. $250 is steep. I paid $130 for mine a few months back.
