Normally I use a dry graphite lube because the grease and WD-40 tend to attract the dust and dirt. Keeps the squeaks down really well.

I have a tri-ball tha I leave in all the time (i turn it so the flat side is up and use it as a step) and therefore it rust. I pour a little motor oil on the ball and the shank to stop the rust and lubricate the ball. Give it a day or 2 before trying to step on the flat after using motor oil as your likely to end up on your *****, but is effective and makes the coupler latch easier.
