I found Haylett rv videos to be really helpful
when we were looking and couldn't go to outlets to see them first hand.
It helped us cut out a lot of units off out list and narrow our focus.

Here's a handy calculator to help consolidate all the numbers.

It's UVW is 5795 pounds with 1800 pounds cargo capacity.

This was going to be the replacement for the Coleman we sold, but then got an F350 and went to a fifth wheel instead. Would have been 20K less expensive, but it limited our long term use case where the new one we got we see a long term planned use with it.

That is a nice looking camper. I'm going thru something similar to the OP and have basically zeroed in on a Jayco 264BH since I absolutely do not want a slide due to the added complexity and weight.

Don't guess on tongue weight. Weight it! Published tongue weight on my trailer is 430 pounds. Actual tongue weight is 900 pounds. So the specs can be a more than a little off. Size, number and location of batteries, propane tanks and spare tire impacts tongue weight. These items are typically not included in the tongue weight spec from the manufacture.

We got a jay flight 267 really similar to yours this year and absolutely love it! Can't go wrong with a Jayco, especially for the $. It's crazy how fast you can get to GVWR. I also keep a tool bag and air compressor in my truck bed.

Our gvwr on the trailer is I think 7500, truck has 1836 payload (3.5 eb XLT 4x4 max tow). Our dogs are heavier than your kiddos. I have estimated about 600 lbs of added stuff in the trailer (which is 5933 lbs dry).

Between hitch, trailer, dogs, wife + me, etc, we're surprisingly close to GVWR. Truck has more than plenty of power, but once you hit 65 mph we get truck suck and wind blown. I love my truck but I think next time around I'll at minimum go HDPP, but more likely a Godzilla Super Duty. Plus, it's a great excuse to buy a Super Duty!

This is what I'm afraid of. I don't want to push it to the point that I don't feel safe driving it.

I'm beginning to see that I'll probably end up in a Super Duty sooner rather than later.
When I started looking at trucks, I was looking at Tacoma's! At the rate I'm going, I'll be in a F350 Dually before long.

I'll second this. I have a truck with very similar specs to yours (my payload is about 60 lbs lower) and this is the TT we have. I was thinking it might be a bit on the large side for my truck, but it tows like a dream. I took it to the CAT scales and loaded up, ready to go, it's about 7,000 lbs. When I first loaded it up with no thought as to where I was putting things, I was at 1,050 tongue weight, which is 15%. That put me right at payload limit in my truck with family, dogs, etc. So, I removed one of the batteries and one propane tank as well as moved a few things to the rear storage compartment. That got me down to right around 900 lbs tongue weight and more cushion as far as payload goes.

If we ever boondock, which I doubt, I'll put the battery and propane back on there and look to save weight elsewhere. I have a spray-in bedliner and hard/fold bedcover, which takes away from payload.

Jayco and Grand Design both make very nice TTs as well. We looked at both and I wanted a Grand Design. I don't recall the model but it was 24 ft instead of 26. Wife wanted the Alpha Wolf and, well, you see who won.
