BTW, did your radiator fan start howling anywhere on that trip when your trans temps were maxing out? what temp did that come on? Had a similar experience pulling a 6x12' u-Haul at about 9,600 combo weight from Omaha to Des Moines.

BTW, if your trans temps are above about 145-155°, your trans thremostat is stuck wide open. Get that changed. after I changed mine out it goes to 142° in the winter and stays there, doesn't get above about 147° in the summer unless I thrash on it, and then it comes right back down.

Easy check, the top trans line on the radiator and one side of the cooler should be screamin' hot when you touch it, if that's not the case, buy parts and get to work. 145° is no joke, you'll feel that right now quick.

so all you guys running in the 140's trans temp regularly and 170 when towing?! basically don't even get close to the 200s'?
and that is on your '04-'08 models?! mind blown here.....
freaking pissed too... i mean have a tranny rebuild and then abuse it like this?! smh...

about my clutch fan.... yeah it does holler.... not while driving on the freeway but if i pull off on the streets it does holler in stop and go traffic after pulling the trailer for a while

Power Steering. follow those lines back, one goes right to the PS reservoir.

With that cooler up front, I doubt trans temps will get much above 160 unless you're really thrashing.

What you said about the radiator fan sounds about right for 'round town driving with some weight on. I didn't have a monitor set up when we did that Denver trip with the u-haul trailer, I'd really like to know how bad I cooked the sucker, 'cuz that fan was MOVING at 70mph and 2.700rpm.

got it. thanks.
i keep reading more and more on this tranny cooler thermostat and various temps people say they run... it really makes my 200-220 and 220-240 temps stand out a lot.... do you know where the temp read out comes from? like the pan or somewhere else?

on the bright side, i finally got to run a 0-60 with this edge programmer the other day and did a 7.4 on tow setting.. idk how decent that is... but there's that hehe

as far as the temps.... that's really what i am trying to get to the bottom of in this thread, are others experiencing the same numbers when pulling a load like this? or something weird about mine?..... on a rebuilt tans and everything else i mentioned there's not much else i can do to this truck. a 6k lbs dry TT is just too much for it to tow at least on long trips right?
Forget dry weight. What is the TT GVWR ?

It might or might not be rusted to crap on the lines, but replacing the guts out of it isn't that hard to do. Go to the dealer and get a new one, they probably call it a 'transmission cooler bypass' or 'transmission thermostat'. Get a 3/4" c-clip and you'll need a 6" C-clamp and a small socket to push with. Give everything a good crush with the c-clamp to start, that loosens it all up. Get that Jeebus-Clip out of there, and the guts should pull right out.
came home , looked underneath and found it. looks nicer then in that pic but that's just cali weather,,,

drove it home, averaged 150 on trans temp
got out the truck and probably waited 3 to 4 minutes before i popped the hood and checked. so going by temperature i felt, would say the line going into the top driver side of the radiator comes from the trans. the one coming out at the bottom goes into the extra cooler then comes off the passenger side and heads back to the trans.
going in that order they were the hottest getting cooler....
none of them burnt my fingers including the one going into the radiator

they all had different degrees of heat and none were simply cold.

means my thermostat is working!?

It would seem like it is working. I feel like I had similar issues back in the day with my transmission running warm. I then started to do my own pan drops, filter changes, and refilled with new fluid. seemed like every time i did that, the transmission temp would run cooler.
I cannot stand behind that 100% as I have replaced the thermostat and lines running up a couple of years back since it was leaking. After dropping that pan a few times, I invested in the dorman pan with the drain bolt.... holy crap batman, so much easier. I then continued to exchange the fluid ever so often.
I just returned from a 3 hour trip, 94 degrees out, 97% humidity, with a total weight of 12280lbs and the transmission didn't get above 182 but stayed around 164-178 pretty consistently. Have you tried giving the radiator and aux cooler a good bath? It seems like your fan is working because I never hear mine howling. I'd seriously consider you start exchanging the fluid out in that transmission and see what she does. I used motorcraft mercon V and the cheapest place I can usually find it is at Amazon.
I don't mean to steal from the thread but what is everyone's oil temps? Mine is upwards of 223 degrees while towing and I'm starting to worry this is to much. It'd be nice if we knew what the correct operating temperatures are supposed to be.....
