2016 XLT Sport Pkg Tow Rating
A previous post in this forum has brought up a question that I'm unable to find an answer. My truck shown below is rated to tow 8,400 lbs. if not for the Sport Pkg it's rating would be 10,100 lbs. Without debating GCWR, payload, and the legality of exceeding either...what accounts for the difference in rating with what I assumed was an appearance package? I have searched several boards and tried contacting Ford by phone and email without a reasonable explanation. THanks in advance.

No clue in the Order Guide or the Trailer towing selector. The difference in tow rating is caused by the difference in GCWR, but no reason for that difference.
GCWR with Sport pkg is 13,500, but GCWR without sport pkg is 15,200. Same 5.0L engine, same 3.55 e-locker axle, same 18" tires and wheels. The answer is probably buried somewhere in the body builder's guide. which I haven't bothered to get into.

Thanks for the quick response Smokey. I've run out of places to search and people to ask. Hoping someone will have some insight. Your name sounds familiar. Did you frequent the Dieselstop.com forum a long time ago?

No one knows. Not even Ford, there was a thread where someone shared the emails they'd sent/received from FMC. Apparently no one knows.
The GCWR reduction only affects 2016 5.0L V8 Sport trims. Some have suggested that maybe it applies to the "special edition" sport package. The one with the fancy red accents and such. But this has not been confirmed anywhere. Or that perhaps the suspension of the "sport" package is tuned slightly even though that should be superseded by the Fx4 package...Who the heck knows.
Kinda unrelated and I hate to ask this, but Grand Dude, what is your payload rating?

Sixshooter,
Thanks for your input. My truck's GVW is 6,800 with a Payload of 2,054. I've been searching for the post you mentioned. Any idea how long ago that was or maybe a link? Thanks

Yeah, very active as a moderator from changeover of Jason's bulletin board system (BBS) to a the startup of Ford-Diesel.com website in 1999, thru the domain change to TheDieselStop about 2001, and on until I sold my 7.3L in 2010. I'm still shown as a "super moderator" on TheDieselStop, but I haven't been very active for a few years.

Here's the one I was thinking of. But it has been discussed in many other threads as well.

whew, looking at your setup I though you might beat me. 2054 is still better than a lot of other F150s

nobody knows why there is a difference, personally I wouldn't worry about the gcw on the sport pkg dot looks at axle, tire, and gvw ratings. as long as you're under those you won't have a problem
