I'm trying to figure out how Fox Acoustics built a box that'll fit a JL Audio 10W3. Their box fits a mounting depth of 6.25", but in my sketching and best thinking it doesn't seem like it will work. They've got a cutout that goes deeper with ABS plastic to get a better mounting depth. The 10W3 has a 5.91" mounting depth, and 14mm of excursion. The EV3 I'm looking at has a 5.625" mounting depth and 14mm of excursion so it may work. I'm not sure how thick it is above the mounting surface, and can't find that dimension anywhere. That's the only thing truly scaring me about pulling the trigger on it. I really don't want to lift the seat to make a sub fit. For just one I have to go with a 4 ohm DVC or a 2 ohm SVC. I can't wire a 2ohm DVC for 2 ohm at the amp. It'd be either 4 ohm (my amp would put out ~300W RMS) or 1 ohm which my amp isn't rated for.

I have a thought about mounting the sub on an angle if it doesn't clear. Like tilting it 20-45 degrees left or right. Should (theoretically) get better mounting clearance (cut out diameter is only 8-7/8"). I'll be looking to coat whatever box I do instead of trying to wrap with carpet, and I'm definitely not trying to do it with upholstery vinyl. Learned my lesson after trying to vinyl wrap dash parts with 3M vinyl. Lol. Some things are better left to the pros.

This is the box, showing the "cut out" I'm referring to.

Alright, so did a quick drawing today at work and I’ve got a plan going forward. Ordered a new Sundown Audio 10 EV-3 Dual 4 ohm sub today, planning to build a box under the middle seat. Below is a PDF of the theoretical box I’ll be building. As you can see, the sub just barely breaks the plane of the top of the box (top left of pic). The red portion under the box is 1/2”, and is there to represent the area the excursion of the sub will be in, that is the danger zone. The box is 18”x18” in this drawing, and using 3/4” MDF. I’m not sure those are the correct sizes, but they should be close. This sub is recommended for a 0.5cf sealed box according to Sundown’s website. Car Audio Bargain has them as “B Stock” for $88 and free shipping. I don’t care if it’s blemished because it’ll be hidden anyway. A quick dirty drawing I did looks like I can pull it off. I’ll have to relief cut the top MDF above the sub towards the back of the magnet to allow it to clear and have adequate venting for cooling. I’ll do it with a router to make it clear. My measurements (if I remember correct) are 8” at the front of the seat, and 7.25” at the rear of the seat in the middle. I chose the middle because it won’t have the handle in the way, and you can push the carpet on the bottom of the seat up a little. I’m no longer worried about mounting depth at all. Now, clearance with the floor is a little bit of a leap of faith. I can’t find a dimension of how far it extends above the mounting surface at rest. I have 1” of clearance built in between the floor and the mounting surface. I’m making the assumption of having 0.25” of sub above the mounting surface, plus ~0.5” of excursion which should leave around 0.25” of clearance, maybe 3/16” after the box settles in the carpet a bit. If need be I can move the mounting surface up some (within reason) and do a fiberglass section above the sub to get better mounting depth. On paper, and with the assumptions I’ve made it will work. But we all know that sometimes what works in theory doesn’t work in practice so we’ll see what happens

Lol. I think I understand most of it, this is my third time researching all of this. There’s so much to look at, it gets so confusing. I hope so too! I plan to do some sound treatment fairly soon too, should help the stock Sony speakers until I replace them.

Update time! I've changed jobs, I'm now a Crane and Rigging Engineer for Universal Plant Services in Deer Park, TX.

I built a box for that Sundown EV3, it's ugly, it doesn't fit properly (didn't take all the necessary dimensions), and is too tall. So I'm not posting pictures. Lol. I need to build a new box but it's so hot, I'm waiting a bit. Sub sounds incredible. In a sealed box, certain songs can make loose clothing shake in the front seat.

My APIM failed the other day. I was having issues where it would drop my phone from day one, the past couple weeks it wouldn't connect my phone at all, and the GPS stopped working. Reset the as-built data to factory and took it in. When I was doing that I got a code for "System Internal Failures", which I told them I found because I thought to check for DTC's at Autozone. Lol. They replaced the APIM with one newer than what the 2018's are rolling out with, according to the radio tech. When they fired it up they were shocked because it came back up with a Lincoln Presidential theme. Lol. They call and tell me that Ford apparently has a glitch in my as-built data and to come see if I want it changed. Apparently, when I changed my data back, it didn't fully take due to the APIM issues. I totally blew their minds, but pretended it was just a Ford glitch. Lol. Anyway, I've got a new APIM with Sync version 3.0. The screen looks crisper now.

While they had my truck they gave me a loaner (stopped doing them a week before my parts came in, but gave me one because they had promised one) 2018 extended cab F-150 long bed with one of the ecoboost engines. That thing paired up with the 10-speed transmission is an animal. Made me think about trading on one, but when I started my 5.0 back up and got on the gas I decided not to. Lol

Id do it with two of the EV3’s, but I’d need a 1,000W RMS amp... Lol. I emailed and asked if they could do a single sealed for a ‘16, never got a response.

Thanks! Yeah, just been hectic lately! Between changing jobs, helping my parents with their house, looking for my own house, saving all I can, etc. doesn't leave much time for the forum anymore! I'm hoping I can start being more active on here again. I miss all of y'all! I'm actually in Chicago right now for work. Flew up this morning, and fly back to Houston tomorrow morning. This new job has me traveling a good bit so far, this is the second trip in about a month and a half.
