i used the spray painT for plastic. and yes the rails just pop off. need to give it a little oompf and they come off. i did the tail gate cover as well but forgot to take a pic of it. if you have a bedliner on the tail gate you will have to loosen it to replace the tailgate cap. they were really faded and this is just a quick fix. im gonna replace them here soon with brand new ones.

you could use plasti dip as well.
