Why? There are better tunes out there. Or are you just trying to be that guy.

If there are better tunes "out there" why doesn't Ford use them? They are under tremendous pressure to get the highest possible MPG out of the EPA testing.

Ford has to build the factory tune to please the masses. Needs to get a little out of everything.... power, fuel mileage, drivability, reliability, etc. Custom tunes gives you more control of your truck and can push the envelope a little more since they do not have to worry about paying warranty. So they can run it slightly leaner to increase mileage. Every vehicle I have tuned I have seen an increase in mileage. It may not be a lot but still around 1 mpg increase.

The tuners are not increasing mileage by leaning out the A/F ratio. In fact they richen it in most cases.

Ok that may be that they richen it, not entirely sure but looks like the main factor to a stock tune is emissions. Least emissions does not necessarily mean better fuel mileage. Ford more than likely has to achieve certain emission standards for the vehicle. Unless I am mistaken by my research.

But I am not a tuner, so my understanding could be wrong. But what I'm trying to say is that Ford's tune is not neccessarily the best tune for mileage.

i wanted MPT, but they refused to ship to CA.

i went w 5 star, and the MPG tune wasnt bad. talking to him on the phone was very helpful, but he did approach things as a guy who wanted to sell something. when asked how an aftermarket muffler will improve exhaust flow (and help with a CAI) when the factory muffler is literally straight-through, he just changed the subject.

just go w a performance tune. the MPG difference isnt worth the fun.

ohh, canned.

dude, for an extra few bucks, you can have 5 custom tunes with that tuner, which will let you pick how you want your truck to perform, and at what octane levels. just dish out the cash. you already spent a bunch on the truck, what's a few more dollars to get a proper tune?

I would be happy if the truck would get what Ford said it would. I realize it's a 360hp, 6000lb truck, But it would be nice if it would get what it was supposed to get. I'm starting to think this whole "tune" idea isn't worth the time, effort, and $. I mean it would take the entire rest of the time I'm going to own this truck(about 9 more years), just to recover the investment cost if I'm only going to see 1 mile per gallon increase in fuel mileage. Then there is the whole warranty "issues" thing....................

P.S. I am painfully aware of how much I paid for this truck, and I think about every time I open the door.

I think putting in the mileage calculator was the biggest mistake Ford ever did for the truck. My 05 got worse mileage but I never cared cuz I couldn't look at it.

have both an eco and perf tune from MPT on 87 octane. Both give similar mileage increases. .5-1mpg but the perfomance tune just runs better. You can tell from how the engine sounds IMO. The economy tune lugs too much trying to stay in the fuel economy gears leading to knocking.
