Default Still watching the dipstick on 5.0

My 2011 XLT 5.0 is now pushing 23,800 miles.

It's 5,000 miles since the last oil change, which was 7.7 quarts of Castrol EDGE 5W20, and a FL500S Motorcraft filter. The oil life indicator says 51% left.

I haven't been babying it since the oil change - I bought a smallish dump trailer, tandem axle, 5' x 10' bed, and when it's loaded it is right at 7000#.
I've been pulling it up and down the highway in tow/haul, and loading it and maneuvering it on turf.

When I filled it, it was right at the top little hole on the dipstick.

I confirmed it the next morning.

Tonight, it's exactly 1/2 way betwen the two dots - so it's maybe used 1/3 to 1/2 qt in 5,000 miles.

This means I won't have to add between oil changes at all - when we were on the last oil consumption thread, it was almost a quart down at this point.

So I'm thinking that my 5.0 is finally broken in.

Anybody else have similar results?

If you want to be sure send your oil to black stone labs...they will tell you what your engine is really doing and let you decide on oil change intervals in an informed way versus seat of the pants.

Thanks for responding Mr Snips - but oil change intervals don't concern me at all since FOMOCO recommends 10,000 miles, and I'm using a full synthetic to boot.

There were a lot of threads about oil consumption on the 5.0's, and I was just happy to report that my usage seems to be slowing as I accumulate more miles.

Not similar, better. I'm at 12,5 and it uses nothing detectable. I'm thinking mine is broken in too. Kind of odd how nowadays engines are tight and lasting longer that some are satisfied with any real oil usage on a new vehicle.
