I think there is more at stake here than this. The E-boost platform is a powertrain directive that Ford hopes to implement in one form or another over their entire line up of gas engines in the next 5 years. If the E-Boost motors start grenading at 5yr/60K than they are faced with two options as an OE.
1) Sweep the mess under the carpet, alienate tens of thousands of consumers, and start over with a blank sheet of paper (IE, small diesel,hybrid, etc.) While this is a possible outcome, it would be a very painful process for Ford to endure and would destroy the solid foundation they currently enjoy as a brand.
2) Launch a very public (and expensive) campaign to clean up the problem and to re-engage the consumer on the power train. I think this scenario is the more likely of the two.

I am an EB guinea pig. I think the power plant has enough positive merits to be an an alternative to large displacment V-8's. As mentioned, time will be the ultimate judge of this transition. It is a transition similar to the introduction of smaller displacement,high rpm, multi-cylinder engines by the Japanese motorcycle companies during the 70's. That market transition was met by much opposition, and the rest is now history.
