Long term reliability for 5.0
#21
I'd sell you my 13 STX 5.0 with 23K on it for $19,000. Never been back to dealer, still under power train warranty.

I ended up getting a new ford short block at 52,000 as it was knocking decently, consistently as it would start to warm up. running great now!

Major engine failure
So this knocking noise is the death tap of the 5.0? Reason I ask mine has been doing it for months maybe even a year I contribute it to lose heat shield or something of that sort as I could never pin point it well this past Saturday the truck started to miss burn oil like a mother f×@ker and had no power it is still under warranty and is currently at the dealer waiting to be looked at I towed it in because it got a mysterious engine oil leak as well I have 98k on it the truck gets used it tows almost weekly but I expected more out of it then this any one tell me what symptoms they had before short block replacement was needed?

Major engine failure
Up date on my 2013 5.0 with 98k on it the engine did end up suffering major engine failure still covered under the power train warranty but ford is trying every thing possible to get out of it see pictures has any one else seen this type of failure

Sorry to hear but please keep me updated. Im in the market for a preowned truck and Im in the 2011 - 2014 price range considering only the 5.0. If Ford bails on you I would like to know, perhaps give Dodge a looksy. Good luck!

Cause Fiat wouldn't try and do that to you.

5.0 Reliability
So I've been hearing mixed opinions as I look around on what the long term reliability is for the 5.0. Some are still advocating going with an older truck with the 4.6 or 5.4 as more proven engines and avoiding '11-'12 5.0's (Which are the only ones in my under $20k budget). Others I've seen said the 5.0's still have had some issues in '13 and '14 too.
I ask because I'm looking at one in a 2012 with 125k. To me this seems like fairly low mileage, but I'm not sure if these are more problem prone, if I should be looking for a lower mile 4.6 or 5.4 for the same budget or what.
Since I'm asking too, is this kind of diesel like idle sound normal? I've only looked at this one, but heard others say they all make this idle sound. No knocking or metallic sounds or anything, just a kind of glag glag glag that I could best describe as kind of like a diesel sound if you open the hood and listen to it. Not really noticeable with the hood closed or while driving.

FORD lifer
As far as reliability goes, its never let me stranded anywhere, I'm at 198,000 miles and I've had some very real issues with it.
First - it burns now and has always burned oil - about a quart to 1100 miles.
I've paid for a new steering rack, fixing a leaky block heater. 2 blend door actuators, '
the drivers side catalytic converter. the MAF sensor, two sets of belts and spark plugs,
3 sets of front brakes, 1 set on the rear,
two oxygen sensors
During the 140,000 mile range it decided to shift down to 1st gear at 45 mph, and FOMOCO replaced the lead frame
in the transmission and serviced it under the warranty program.

215000 miles. 2014 fx2 5.0.
Runs like a fine watch. Smooth quiet powerful. I pull a 7000 lb camper with 1,000 lb of tools including a 6500w generator a dirt bike -nationwide. I change the oil every 3,000 miles full synthetic. Oil drains out like it's new. I don't care if the oil will last 7000 miles I care about the engine. Take care of your stuff it'll take care of you.
