Default BOV!?

Hello All,

I am not an expert just a lady and her truck! I have a 2017 F-150 (4WD); Having the exact same issues as you Racer944. Took the truck to the dealership and basically they told me it could be a variety of things (all the way to the transmission).. I really dislike that since I am a woman, I MUST be taken advantage of!? 😠 Wondering if you could give me the info to the BOV as I don't know what it is or it looks like!? Blow off valve? or is it a Boot? Please help, I would like to fix the problem without giving my money away! Thank you.

Hi There;

Is your truck an ECOBoost/Turbo 3.5L? If not, you do not have this item and it is not your issue. Keep in mind that mine is a 2011 so could be different than your 2017.

If it is an ECOBoost motor, then the BOV serves to bleed off excess pressure from the Turbo's under acceleration. There are two of these little BOV units since its a twin Turbo setup. It consists of a few parts that come in the kit that I mentioned above, but basically the problem is there is a small rubber diaphragm that gets torn, and that is what causes the noise I described above. Changing them is not overly difficult but they are in an a bit of an awkward spot to get at. The BOV's are located behind the front wheels in the lower engine bay area, so you need to remove the tires and reach in to get at them. if you do decide to try to replace on your own, stuff rags below the valve incase you drop a bolt. If you don't do this, and you drop something, there is a good chance you will never see it again as whatever it is will drop inside below the engine. BTW, there are some you tube videos on the BOV if your curious to see what its like...

Your dealer is correct in that it could be different things making the noise as its tough to diagnose without driving and hearing the noise. In my case the dealer was convince it was the front hubs... I disagreed so took matters into my own hands. Note that in my case there was no mechanical noise at all (no clicks/grinds etc) just a howling noise like blowing over the mouth of an empty bottle.

Good luck and something to keep in mind is that this is likely the cheapest scenario of the items the dealer mentioned so if it really seems like what I am describing, maybe tell them about this and have them diagnose if that could be the problem before other items.

Picture of the kit attached for reference. Rubber seal to the left of the spring in the picture was the offending culprit in my case...

Thanks for the Reply! My current issue sounds very close to your description, this is my reasoning for asking. I will obviously be more conservative with fixing than the dealership and mechanics.

My Specs: 2017, 4x4, 5.0L V8 FFV Engine, Electric 6-speed Auto w/ Tow mod.

I appreciate the help and hopefully once I find a fix... I will share!

So you don't have any of the equipment mentioned, so it's not going to be the fix/cause of your problem.

Can you describe in as much detail as possible, what it sounds like, and exactly what you need to do in order to reproduce the sound? Any chance you can record it?
